On a night when thrillseekers and entertainment fans from all over the Gulf
Coast region came to see whether or not Bubba Blackwell could set a new record
jumping fifty-two cars aboard his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, racing on the
track reached a frenzied level of competition. The packed house of fans
witnessed David Breazeale work his VooDoo Motorsports magic in to a
wire-to-wire victory in the 50 lap super late model battle for the Mississippi
State Championship Challenge Series (MSCCS). In other late model action it was
Pace, Florida's Ricky Haugen scoring a second straight win in the GM Performance
divison. Championship titles were determined in all Deep South Speedway classes
in a night full of spills and thrills on the racetrack.
Bubba Blackwell,
The American Dare Devil from nearby Bon Secour, Alabama, was able to clear the
challenging jump of cars earning the new world mark in the business of
motorcycle stunt jumping. The event was video taped by several production
companies from around the globe, including the Canadian Broadcast team
from 'TV Made Me Do It'. Blackwell's leap on the Harley-Davidson XR-750
surpassed the 1973 record of 50 cars set by the late, great Evel Knievel which
was done in the Los Angeles Coliseum over three decades ago.
But it was the
action on the high-banked, lightning fast racing oval of Deep South Speedway
that had fans stunned with amazement. Breazeale, from Four Corners,
Mississippi would score the fastest lap in time-trial qualifying for the super
late models on hand at Deep South Speedway, then go on to win the Fast-8 Dash
among the quick eight qualifiers earning the pole position for the fifty lap
main event.
With frantic
scambles on-going for positions throughout the event Breazeale was able to hold
off the late race charge of Tennessee ace Vic Hill to take the checkered flag
and big payday. Breazeale drives the Voodoo Motorsports owned racecar sponsored
by Black Warrior Auction Company and Creel Brothers. The MasterSbilt racecar of
Breazeale was prepared by Stuckey Enterprises and powered to the win by a Jay
Dickens Racing Engine. Hill crossed the stripe in second as Jackson,
Mississippi racer Scott Slay finished third. 2008 Advance Auto Parts Thunder
Series Champion Rick Rogers of Knoxville, Tennessee rallied late in the event to
bring his BKW, Inc. sponsored machine home with a fourth place run, as
Louisiana's David Ashley rounded out the top-five.
The GM
Performance Late Model event got off to a wild start in heat racing action and
then continued to leave the crowd in awe as racers scattered all over the
multi-grooved racing surface dueling it out for positions. Haugen returned with
the same form that had led him to a winning run two weeks ago and streaked away
from his nearest challengers during the closing laps of the event for his third
feature win of 2008. Fellow Floridian Larry Boutwell made it interesting in the
last few laps but would have to settle for second place just ahead of Ryan
Little who took the third spot. Little, of Satsuma, Alabama clinched the 2008
GM Performance Late Model Championship at Deep South Speedway with the
solid run. Coming home fourth and fifth, respectively, were Steven Brantley and
Steve Turner.
In the Open Wheel
Modified main event, it was a repeat performance of the season-long battle for
the divisional title with Greg Hopkins and Ron Tubbs going at it tooth and nail
throughout the feature. When the checkered flag waved Tubbs, from Gulfport,
Mississippi took the win, but came up just short in the points tally for the
season's championship for the Open Wheel Modifieds as Hopkins of Molino,
Florida, used the second-place run to capture the title in his Hi-Rev
Performance sponsored modified. Finishing third through fifth were Todd Jones,
Nick Poole and Todd Karl.
Allen Taylor,
a.k.a. The Saraland Express, was the feature winner in a wild and wooly Vintage
Racecar main event that saw heated tempers and beat up fenders get the best of a
handful of drivers battling for the win. Taylor was able to scoot away from the
fracas that involved the new 2008 Vintage Racecar Champion Billy Boothe and two
other rivals, Jay Coleman and Jody Beech as part of a five-car pileup late in
their feature event. Taylor notched the win with Ansel Reed in second, Stuart
Wilson in third and Nick White in fourth. Boothe was able to continue after the
crash and eventually wound up with a fifth place finish, good enough to claim
the points title in the Vintage Racecar class.
Taylor was on his
way to another Super Hobby victory but a broken water pump sent him pitside
midway through the feature. Michael Rhodes would end up taking the win with
Arthur Sawyer coming home in second. Rounding out the top-five finishers were
Jeffrey Spann in third, Randy Darby fourth and Greg Tuberville crossing the
stripe in fifth. Even though the mechanical woes sidelined Taylor for the
night, his stellar season-long performance earned him the 2008 Super
Hobby Championship at Deep South Speedway.
The Stinger
feature event yielded a new winner in victory lane as Josh Livingston picked up
the win over 2008 Stinger Champion Jamie Mozingo of Grove Hill, Alabama. Third
through fifth were Michael Gallott, Aaron Kiaunis, and John Giermanski Jr. The
Limited Sportsman season points finale came right down to the final lap as Sean
Goodwin did everything possible to try and overtake the points lead away from
Michael Rhodes. Goodwin posted a convincing win with Brett Henderson finishing
in second as Rhodes rallied from a prior spin to clinch the title with a
third-place run. Russell Flynn was fourth and Chuck Moore finished fifth, as
Rhodes from Molino, Florida earned the title with his late race charge back up
to third.
In Hobby Stock
action Robertsdale, Alabama's Derrick Johnson gave it all he had to try and take
the season's title including winning a thrilling race to the checkers,
but Stephen Allday's second place finish would secure the Hobby Stock crown.
Johnson won the race, but Allday from Citronelle, Alabama would take the title.
Finishing third through fifth behind Johnson and Allday were Matthew Tobias,
Junior Vick and Chris Burger.
The next
scheduled action at Deep South Speedway is set for Saturday night, November 8th
with the running of the Outhouse Nationals for Hobby Stock and Bomber Division
cars, plus other events to be announced.
