On a night when Gulf Coast race fans welcomed Hall of Fame racing legend Red
Farmer to the
high-banks of Deep South Speedway, it was Ricky Haugen who stole the show to
score on the track. Haugen, from Pace, Florida, had started from the rear of
the field in his qualifying heat race and would work his way to the front with a
rousing run through the high speed traffic on the lightning fast oval. The
victory was Haugen's second of the season in GM Performance Late Model action at
Deep South Speedway, and it took everything that Haugen could muster in order to
hold off repeated challenges for the lead by Stephen Brantley and Ryan Little.
Farmer, at seventy-eight years of age brought the crowd to their feet early in
the evening as he rallied to finish second in his qualifying heat, closed in on
the leaders in the closing laps of the main event to score a fourth place finish
and was followed to the stripe by Tom Lohr round out the top-five.
Fans from
across the Gulf Coast region turned out to get a chance to meet Red Farmer, and
watch the Hueytown, Alabama legend battle with the young guns on the track.
Prior to his strong top-five run at Deep South Speedway, Farmer made a special
promotional appearance at the Bass Pro Shops location in Spanish Fort, Alabama,
where crowds turned out to meet Alabama Gang leader whose sixty years as a
leading race champion also earned him the honor as one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest
Drivers of All-time. Farmer was given a rousing standing ovation when Deep
South Speedway presented him with a special award and commerative plaque in
appreciation for his visit to the racing facility in Loxley, Alabama.
All divisions
provided the fans who packed hillside terrace at Deep South Speedway plenty of
excitement with side-by-side battles and sparks throughout the evening. Another
classic Open Wheel Modified duel between Gulfport, Mississippi ace Ron Tubbs and
Molino, Florida talent Greg Hopkins saw Tubbs prevail for the win. The race to
the checkered flag intensified during the final three laps as Tubbs felt the
pressure of the oncoming Hopkins trying to take the top spot. Tubbs prevailed
with Hopkins in second as Nathan Ingersoll, Randy Booker and Aaron Perritt
finished third through fifth, respectively. The Super Hobby division main event
saw Allen Taylor survive a wild and wooly affair to score another big win over
Greg Tuberville. Scott Albritton was third with Terry Iknor and John Godwin
crossing the stripe in fourth and fifth.
Jaime Mozingo
of Grove Hill, Alabama was the winner in the Stinger feature with Robertsdale's
Derrick Johnson taking the win in Hobby Stock action. The Vintage Racecar main
event was won by Pensacola's Ansel Reed and Bret Henderson of Foley, Alabama
roared to the win in the Limited Sportsman feature.
This Saturday night, September 20th, the Super Late Models

Championship Challenge Series rolls into Deep South Speedway for a sanctioned
event plus the final championship racing points event of 2008 in all other
