O’Reilly ASCS Sprint Cars and Super Late Models Return for Labor Day Weekend Racing Explosion – Aug 30th & 31st
Nathan Ingersoll pulled the trigger on the field of GM Performance Late Model competitors Saturday night at Deep South Speedway roaring to his third feature win of 2008 at the lightning fast oval near the Gulf Coast. Despite threatening weather throughout the day Deep South Speedway was able to host another exciting Saturday Night Special lineup of short track action with strong fields of cars in each division. Ingersoll, from nearby Robertsdale, Alabama, motored away from the field in his Schoen Heating & Air backed late model in GM Performance division holding off a late race charge from veteran Randy Little. Ryan Little crossed the finish line in third place with a pair of Floridians rounding out the top-five as Ricky Haugen of Pace took fourth while Frank Wilson of Harold ended up in fifth.
After going nearly two seasons without a victory, the wheel of fortune turned for Ansel Reed in the Vintage Racecar main event. Reed led from the outset and performed flawlessly behind the wheel to outmaneuver his challengers to the checkered flag. Throughout the closing stages of the race Reed felt the pressure of no less than three other drivers trying to steal the win, but to no avail. Reed, from Pace, Florida, held on for the victory with Jody Beech, Billy Boothe, Jay Coleman and David Kelley rounding out the top-five finishers.
Arthur Sawyer led the way for the win in the Super Hobby division with Jeffrey Spann, Greg Tuberville, Scott Albritton and Phillip Goudreault finishing second through fifth, respectively. In Hobby Stock action it was Derrick Johnson returning to his winning ways to take the victory while Ronnie Vick, Shannon Hodges, Josh Showles and Chris Burger rounded out the top-five. Jamie Mozingo produced plenty of excitement in the Stinger division with a late race pass for the lead to get by John Giermanski Jr. and roar on to the win in the four cylinder class. Finishing in third through fifth were Gary Watson, Angela Hayes and Curtis Gentry. Two drivers from Molino, Florida took feature wins in their respective divisions on Saturday night as Michael Rhodes wheeled his way to victory in the Limited Sportsman race while Greg Hopkins scored yet another win in the Open Wheel Modified main event. Hopkins became the first driver in 2008 at Deep South Speedway to hit the double-digit mark in the win column with ten victories as he led Ron Tubbs, Randy Booker, Ronnie Jordan Jr. and Don Livingston to the finish line as the top-five. Second through fifth place in the Limited Sportsman feature went to Wayne Gunn, Bret Henderson, Chuck Moore and Kyle Johnson.
