Sometimes it seemed like the more you drove the less money you had. I remember one time Buck Baker and Lee Petty and I had to put our money together just to split a hot dog and a Coke.

FRANK WILSON & TRACY SUTTON RUMBLE TO LATE MODEL WINS AT DEEP SOUTH SPEEDWAY Print E-mail

Packed House Witness Eight Different Feature Winners in Rock and Roll Night of Racing Action

_ED83136.jpg LOXLEY, ALABAMA (August 4, 2008)   In one of the wildest night’s of racing excitement so far this season at Deep South Speedway a pair of Twin-20 lap late model battles lived up to their billing and ignited sparks that highlighted photo finishes, racecars barrel-rolling on the track and intense competition in each and every feature event at the track located just north of the Alabama coast.  Tracey Sutton scored the win in the first of the double-feature races for the late models as  Frank Wilson of Harold, Florida made the trip to the winner’s circle in the second GM Performance Late Model feature of the evening while Flomaton ace.  Sutton held on to win the first twenty-lap affair on the lightning fast racing surface with Larry Cifra and Randy Little putting pressure on for the win throughout the race.  As the checkered flag waved on feature number one, Sutton, Cifra and Little took the top three spots with Ryan Little crossing the finish line in fourth while Wilson had to settle for fifth.  Wilson would turn the tables on the competition in the second feature of the night after starting on the pole and blasting away from the field to pick up the big win.

_ed82935.jpg    ‘That first race was just a little crazy for all of us,’ said Wilson after his win.  ‘This Goliath Racecar was perfect out on the track and I had hoped that we could have gotten to the front in the first feature, but with the track being as good as it was, there were cars racing all over the place in front and beside me so I had race hard but keep my car out of trouble in that deal.  Phil Gann up in North Carolina has really done a great job for us with this new racecar and we’re proud of the way it performed here tonight.  We’re just real happy to get the win,’ added Wilson.

_ED83104.jpg    After winning the first late model feature, Sutton was presented to the packed grandstand crowd for the inversion draw for feature number two and the number came up five putting Wilson on the pole of the second main event for the drivers in the GM Performance powered late model class.  Wilson mashed the gas and pulled away from the outset and ran a higher groove around the four-tenths mile racing oval than his competitors.  Behind Wilson was an all out war for positions which turned heated both on and off the track as cars swapped positions lap after lap.  At the checkers Wilson outran the father-son duo of Randy and Ryan Little, who took second and third, while Monte Skinner finished fourth with Danny Joe Thomas rounding out the top-five.

_ED82921.jpg Allen Taylor roared through the entire field from the back of the pack to notch his seventh win of the season in the Super Hobby action.  The driver known as The Saraland Express tagged the rear of the field just before the green flag waved as a result of having to pit at the last minute to change a flat tire.  When the field went green Taylor began weaving his magic through the pack and eventually bringing the crowd to their feet as he put on a show racing his way to the front.  Taylor’s winning run was strong enough to hold off the charges of Arthur Sawyer and Jerry Dickinson who finished second and third, with Scott Albritton coming home fourth and Tim McCurdy taking fifth place at the stripe.

_ED83142.jpg    Greg Hopkins wound up his Hi-Rev Performance sponsored Open Wheel Modified to outgun a charging Ron Tubbs in the race to the checkered flag as the pair battled lap after lap.  Hopkins scored his ninth win of 2008 in Modified action with Tubbs hanging tough for second place.  Ronnie Jordan Jr. finished third with Nathan Ingersoll winding up fourth and Kyle Rutkoski in fifth.   Billy Boothe streaked to yet another winning run in the Vintage Racecar main event, following Boothe to the checkered flag in the top-five were Jay Coleman, Allen Taylor, Jody Beech and Matt Byrd.  Steven Allday returned to victory lane in the Hobby Stock feature followed by Derrick Johnson, John Boyd, Matthew Tobias and Joseph Adams.

The Hillbilly Assassin Michael Rhodes of Molino, Florida was back to his winning ways in the Limited Sportsman main event.  Rhodes took his ThermoDyne Powder Coating sponsored racer to the win besting Sean Goodwin, Wayne Gunn, Chuck Moore and Kyle Johnson.  Kevin Dunlap of Atmore snapped Jamie Mozingo’s winning ways in the Stinger division.  Dunlap wheeled his way to the winner’s circle with an impressive run to the checkered flag.  Mozingo had to settle for second with Chris Woodham, Roger Kight and Roger Barber taking the top-five finishing spots.  In the early going, Stinger driver Dillon Barfield took a scary ride down the backstretch as his racecar barrel rolled seven times bringing out the first red flag period of the evening.  The young Barfield crawled out of the demolished car uninjured and racing continued.

With this coming Saturday (August 9th) scheduled as an off-weekend for racing at Deep South Speedway, the next events at the thrilling half-mile oval will see THURSDAY NITE THUNDER return on August 14th.  Racing features for the Stinger and Bombers are slated for the Thursday night show which also allows all types of racecars to test and tune in Open Practice sessions at Deep South Speedway.  The THURSDAY NITE THUNDER events offer a Special $5 Adult Grandstand ticket with Kids 12 and Under admitted FREE into the Grandstands.  Racing takes the green flag at 8:00 p.m. Grandstand Gates open at 6:00 on Thursday August 14th with Pit Gates opening at 5:00.  Pit Passes are $15 for Adults ($5 for Kids 6-12).  As part of the THURSDAY NITE THUNDER excitement spectators can experience thrilling rides around the Deep South Speedway in the track’s Two-Seat Warrior Racecar.  Rides are just $25.00 for three laps at speed.
