Larry Cifra Roars to GM Performance Late Model Win.....Allen Taylor Hits Daily Double with Two Feature Wins in Gulf Coast Action

Saturday night’s racing excitement at Deep South Speedway proved to be as hot as the mid-summer weather with thrilling high-speed drama and battles for the checkered flag throughout the intense racing evening.  The heated racing on the track provided classic door-slamming battles with cars using the ultra wide racing surface to battle three, and sometimes four-wide around the high-banked oval just north of the Gulf Coast.  Larry Cifra of Moss Point, Mississippi raced to his second late model win of the season at Deep South Speedway yet the top story of the night proved to be that of ‘The Saraland Express’, Allen Taylor, who derailed the competition in both the Super Hobby and Vintage Racecar division main events to speed to a pair of feature wins in a single night.  Taylor’s two separate trips to the winner’s circle heightened a night of family celebration as father-in-law Lee ‘Red Dawg’ Reynolds paid a visit to victory lane taking the trophy in a hotly contested Hobby Stock feature which show-cased a full field of revved up racers.  Molino, Florida’s Greg Hopkins chalked up a track-leading eighth win of the season in the Open Wheel Modified division slugfest.  No sooner had the sun set and a coastal breeze began providing a refreshing cool down for the large crowd on hand, did the frenzied action on the track turn the heat up again as last-lap duels for the wins became the order of the evening at the high-banked four-tenths mile speed plant.  Jamie Mozingo of Grove Hill, Alabama blistered the field with a high-side run for the win in the Stinger feature while Bret Henderson outgunned his rivals for the Limited Sportsman victory.  Some of the battles for position on the track were fueled with heated tempers and finger-pointing on the track, yet fans got all of their money’s worth and were headed home well before the bewitching hour even as the full moon brought out the wilder side of the talented field of competitors on the racetrack.

The GM Performance Late Model feature was a battle from the outset as Larry Cifra drove his Warrior Racecar prepared machine deep into turn one in a scramble with Ryan Little on the first lap.  Cifra took the green flag alongside Little on the outside of row one and drove the Cifra Construction sponsored number 11 racer deep into turn one to take the lead.  Little had posted two straight wins at Deep South Speedway prior to Cifra putting an end to the streak with his rousing Saturday night win.  The top two not only had to concern themselves with lapped traffic and battling among themselves, but also had to race in front of the lightning pace of Rusty Ellis and Monte Skinner each putting up a fight for top-spots on the track.  Cifra not only survived a couple of late race restarts following cautions, but was also able to stave off the final challenges from Little and return to the winner’s circle.  Following Cifra and Little to the stripe were Skinner in third, with Ellis finishing fourth as Randy Little rounded out the top-five.

Allen Taylor turned his busy night at the home of the Saturday Night Special into a pair of feature wins at Deep South Speedway taking the top-cash prizes in the Super Hobby and Vintage Racecar feature races.  Bradley Rhodes mounted a challenge to Taylor in the Super Hobby main, but couldn’t gather enough ground on the race leader as Taylor was too strong in his T-69 Janie racecar to be denied the win.  Following Taylor and Rhodes to the checkered flag as the top-five finishers in the Super Hobby bout were Greg Tuberville, Arthur Sawyer and Jerry Dickinson.  Win number two of the night for Taylor, the driver tagged as ‘The Saraland Express’, came in the Vintage Racecar main event.  Taylor checked out in his Connor Blue T-69 Vintage couple and never looked back, even with Billy Boothe on a determined mission to try and track the leader down.  Taylor took the checkers with Boothe in second, Jody Beech in third with Matt Byrd and Jay Coleman coming home fourth and fifth, respectively.

Greg Hopkins streaked to victory in the Open Wheel Modified feature as he and Ron Tubbs waged a continuing lap-after-lap war for the lead throughout their main event.  Hopkins seized the top-spot for the final time with a lap and a half remaining, then sped on to the win in his Hi-Rev Performance Modified racer.  Following Hopkins and Tubbs was Randy Booker in third, Nick Poole in fourth with Buster Foley rounding out the top-five finishers.

Bret Henderson slammed the door on his closest rivals in the Limited Sportsman event.  Henderson, aboard the Schoen Heating & Air backed K 7 machine out sped Michael Rhodes and Sean Goodwin for the win.  Following Henderson, Rhodes and Goodwin were Chuck Moore in fourth and Rick Tipton finishing fifth.  In Stinger division action, the Grove Hill Posse rolled back out of town with another Deep South Speedway trophy Saturday night as Jamie Mozingo jumped onto the topside of the racing groove and buzz bombed the field for the win.  With Mozingo taking the checkered flag, second through fifth positions went to Randy Johnson, Roger Kight, Curtis Gentry and Ken Osborne.

The final feature of the night saw sparks fly from start to finish as a full field of Hobby Stock entries kept the crowd on their feet.  Lee Reynolds, a.k.a. Red Dawg, made a daring run to the outside of Joseph Adams to snatch the lead, but then had to battle inside and out in the closing laps in order to earn the win.  A handful of on-track slam jobs brought out caution periods with several of the incensed competitors limping their damaged machines to the pits for the night.  Adams finished a very strong second with William Holder crossing the line in third.  Keith Presnell and Derrick Johnson each roared to the front from the back of the pack to come home fourth and fifth.  The crowd packing the hillside sensed the kind of racing they were in store for in the Hobby feature, based on the evening’s earlier preliminary heat races in the Hobby Stock class.  When Red Dawg Reynolds took the checkered flag at 11:32 pm, all of the fans who had stayed for the finale were glad that they did as the Hobby Stock warriors provided a spirited race for positions all over Deep South Speedway’s extreme banking at full speed and putting a wrap on a strong night of superb racing action which showcased talent and hardcore stock car racing
